What Is Wakeboarding?

Wakeboarding is like a combination of water skiing, snowboarding, and surfing. You’re standing on a board with your feet attached, towed behind a speedboat, and your goal is to ride across the boat’s wake and off the crests so you can do killer aerial tricks and stunts. Wakeboarding is popular on rivers, lakes, and areas of open water, but some real rebels have even been known to try to wakeboard on flooded roads and car parks, towed behind a car (we don’t recommend this). Professional wakeboarders compete in the X Games, the WWA Wakeboard World Championships, and other competitions - but you don’t have to be a professional to have fun with the sport. Like any sport, part of the fun is in learning and training. Also like any sport, there are lots of accessories and gear you can buy to make your wakeboarding experience more fun, safe, or give you other advantages. Such as…

Gear

In any sport, you need the right kit - what you wear while you do the thing. Many wakeboarders either wear full neoprene wetsuits, or at least some pieces of neoprene gear. Your choice of gear will depend on the temperature of the water you’re boarding on - not to mention the outside air temperature - and other factors unique to each boarder. For instance, if you’re boarding in cold water, you’ll likely opt for a fully insulated wetsuit and gloves. On the other hand, if you don’t need that much warmth, you can buy individual neoprene pieces - for example, tops, pants, gloves, and heat socks to wear inside your foot bindings to give your feet a little more warmth on the water. You can also buy booties to further enhance your warmth and stability on the board’s foot bindings.

Lifejackets and Other Safety Equipment

On deep water, it’s critical to wear a life jacket - and to have one that fits you well and will give you the proper protection on the water. There are a number of brands that offer life jackets specifically designed for boarding, and at a variety of competitive price points.

It’s also not a terrible idea to invest in a decent helmet. Falling off your board at speed and hitting the water can be pretty nasty on your noggin, and a helmet will help protect against concussion. Look for a helmet that is CE certified for water sports in order to ensure maximum protection.

Other Stuff

Really, there’s a whole universe of stuff out there that you can buy to make your wakeboarding experience awesome, and it’s all up to you what you decide you can’t live without. You can buy a carrier bag for your board. You can buy fins to change your board’s dynamics. You can individualize your handle and tow rope. You can explore “wakeskates,” a hybrid sport that combines skateboarding and wakeboarding. And you can turn your board into a hydrofoil by installing a wake foil, thus changing your wakeboarding experience even further.

The point is that wakeboarding is a fun, fast, and exciting sport that nearly anyone can learn how to do, and there are a ton of things out there that can make the sport even more fun.
